Who’s it right for?

  • Most households looking for a comprehensive and flexible security system

Who is it not for?

  • Buyers on very limited budgets

SimpliSafe is one of the UK’s leading home security brands with a catalogue of systems to choose from. We recommend you choose SimpliSafe if you’re after ready-made packages that can also be customised. All packages are compatible with smart home ecosystems Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Our Editor’s Choice is SimpliSafe’s The Tower – a ready-made package with no need for additional equipment, and self-monitoring and professional monitoring options are available.

What’s in the package?

The Tower offers both indoor and outdoor protection for your home and the entire system is connected via the Base Station. More often than not, SimpliSafe’s competitors don’t offer two entry sensors, but we like that The Tower does as it offers security for both front and back doors. Most of its equipment is designed to cover a wide field of view (FOV) – the wired indoor camera has a 120-degree FOV, and the wireless outdoor camera features an ultra-wide 140-degree FOV and night vision.

We also like the features that the keypad offers as, when paired with your entry sensors, you’ll be notified about security events as well as if you’ve left your windows open. The motion sensor is equally impressive for two reasons; it can protect an entire room with a 10 meter range and a 90-degree FOV and differentiate between human and pet movements.

App and monitoring

You can and should judge a smart home security system by its app and monitoring services. The Tower (and other SimpliSafe packages) ticks all our boxes. With the SimpliSafe app, access security features and control your system remotely. Watch your live camera feed, arm and disarm your system and receive instant security notifications about security events.

SimpliSafe users can choose between self-monitoring or professional monitoring, with two flexible monitoring plans available starting at 53p per day.

If you take out one of the monthly subscription plans, you’ll benefit from the 24/7 professional monitoring. In case of any security concerns, with the more advanced monitoring package, the SimpliSafe monitoring centre is notified, and they can dispatch emergency services to your location.

Our verdict

The SimpliSafe’s The Tower package is a comprehensive ready-made home security system. It comes without the need to purchase additional equipment (but can be easily adapted with add-ons, if you wish), and you have the choice of self or professional monitoring.

It’s not budget-friendly and there are certainly less expensive options, such as SimpliSafe’s The Essentials package. We recommend this package for homeowners who are looking for high-quality equipment, high-tech features and a flexible monitoring plan.

Who’s it right for?

  • Those looking for a fully bespoke system

Who is it not for?

  • Users wanting an off-the-shelf package

Verisure is our best bespoke home security system; all packages are tailored to suit your home’s security needs and each come with a bespoke quote which includes installation costs.

Verisure has a partnership with Arlo cameras, which are known to have excellent quality video, two-way audio, night vision, and sirens.

What’s in the package?

Verisure has everything you’d expect from a smart home security system, as well as some trademark features, such as its ZeroVision alarm that can release a ‘fog’ designed to deter burglars. It’s important to note though, that this feature can only be activated by a professional at the NSI certified Alarm Receiving Centre.

As Verisure’s packages are bespoke, a technican will vist your home for an assessment. This visit will provide you with a tailored package and a full explanation of the system and how it works, so that you get the best use out of it. Add-ons can be discussed with the technician on the day of the evaluation – which you need to book over the phone – and quoted as a package. You’ll also need to pay a £100 (fully refundable) deposit to book.

App and monitoring

Everything can be managed through the Verisure app and, for £32 a month, Verisure will monitor your home. Maintenance is covered in the subscription fee; if anything breaks it will get repaired quickly so you don’t lose any surveillance. Likewise, any batteries will also get replaced by a technician when they reach 30 per cent power, but you will get notified when this needs to happen. It’s this level of detail that scores Verisure top marks on TrustPilot, so whether Verisure is worth it, really depends on your home’s needs and budget.

Our verdict

Verisure’s security offering is among the strongest there is and it has an excellent record of fitting custom security systems, according to customer reviews and is our pick for the best bespoke home security system service.

Remote engineering in the event of a fault
High quality components
Families can communicate and collectively confirm or cancel alarms via the ADT monitoring app
Cons
Professional installation only
High monthly costs
Commitment to a lengthy contract

Who’s it right for?

  • Users who require professional monitoring

Who is it not for?

  • Homeowners on a budget

ADT has been a trusted name in home security for many years, and its Smart Home Alarm Package demonstrates its commitment to evolving with modern technology. This comprehensive security system combines traditional ADT reliability and professional installation with smart home features.

We’ve chosen ADT’s Smart Home Alarm Package as our best system with professional monitoring. With its subscription service, you’ll have access to its ADT’s Remote Operating Centre, which can perform daily system checks and notify the police in the case of an event. What we like most about this service is the ability to fix most technical issues remotely.

What’s in the package?

The package includes a Smart Home Hub with a touchscreen control panel that serves as the command centre for your system, a bell box with flashing LED light and ADT Smart Services to control your system via the app.

Your system is then tailored to your needs, and you can choose from wireless door contacts, PIR motion sensors, a wifi camera and a video doorbell. ADT’s packages will be fully customised to your requirements and each package comes with a bespoke quote.

ADT’s security systems are designed for professional installation. Upon purchase, ADT will schedule a technician to visit your home and install the devices. This process may take a few hours, depending on the size and complexity of your home.

App and monitoring

The ADT Smart Services App allows you to manage your home security remotely, and the security company plans to integrate controls for third-party smart home products that use Matter, enabling control of compatible smart lights, thermostats and other smart technologies.

Your standard subscription includes access to the ADT Remote Operating Centre, which automatically conducts daily system checks, ensuring every device runs optimally. Depending on the subscription level you choose, you, your keyholders, the police, or a private security guard will be notified in the event of a security breach.

Our verdict

The ADT Smart Home Alarm Package offers an advanced security solution that combines home automation and comprehensive protection. If you’re looking for a system with stress-free installation and a professional monitoring plan that includes premium features, such as fixing technical issues remotely and daily system checks, the Smart Home Alarm Package won’t disappoint. However, we wouldn’t advise installing any ADT package if you’re not keen on being locked into a lengthy contract, are on a budget or if professional wired-in installation doesn’t appeal to you.

Ring Alarm and Indoor Camera Pack: Best for DIY installation ★★★★

Best home security systems Ring indoor camera
(Ring)

Key specifications

Cost £269.98
Components 1 base station, 1 keypad (2nd gen), 1 contact sensor (2nd gen), 1 motion detector (2nd gen), 1 range extender (2nd gen), 1 indoor camera
Power source Battery with battery backup, although hub and camera need mains power
Connectivity Wifi
Maximum volume N/A
Smart home support Amazon Echo/Alexa
Monitoring options Self-monitoring with optional paid-for professional monitoring
Pros
Numerous setup options
Affordable subscription rate
Good choice for homes with poor wifi signal
Ideal for renters, all equipment is self-adhesive so it shouldn’t leave marks on your walls
Cons
Night vision lacks clarity

Who’s it right for?

  • Small properties

Who is it not for?

  • Large properties with expansive gardens

Ring is one of the leading brands in smart home security – best known for its innovative doorbell cameras. It offers three preconfigured home security packages each with small, medium and large options to cater for different homes. With Ring, you’ll have the choice of self or professional monitoring and options to customise the ready-made packages.

We chose Ring’s Alarm and Indoor Camera Pack as our best for DIY installation thanks to its self-adhesive devices and detailed instruction videos. The process takes around thirty minutes, and the devices can be easily mounted using the included adhesive strips or screws, depending on your preference. They also offer a professional installation service to be purchased via Amazon.

What’s in the package?

Ring’s Alarm and Indoor Camera Pack includes five pieces of equipment designed to monitor the inside of your home. All devices are connected via the Base Station, which will need to be plugged into a power source and connected to your wifi. Also included is a motion detector that can be wall-mounted, a contact sensor to be installed on doors or windows, and a keypad for arming and disarming your system.

The Ring Indoor Camera offers full HD video quality, live view, night vision, and two-way audio, allowing you to communicate with anyone in your home. The camera also has motion detection and customisable privacy settings.

Our favourite piece of equipment in this package is the range extender. It allows you to increase the signal from your Base Station to reach alarm components that might be otherwise out of range.

App and monitoring

The system integrates seamlessly with the Ring mobile app, which allows you to monitor and control the security system remotely. An optional Ring Protect Plus subscription covers all your home devices and allows access to its 24/7 Assisted Monitoring. Among other things, this sends alerts to your emergency contacts if your burglar alarm is triggered. If you’d like more monitoring features but don’t wish to pay for the Protect Plan – the Basic subscription includes similar features like package alerts, person alerts and rich notifcations, which you pay for per device.

Our verdict

The Ring Alarm system offers a user-friendly, customisable home security solution for homeowners seeking to protect their property. With optional subscription services and the availability of additional Ring devices, the system can be tailored to meet each household’s specific needs.

Although this system is ideal for small properties, adding more components to cover a larger home could mean that it’s more cost-effective to purchase a more extensive system from the start.

Who’s it right for?

  • Larger families with pets

Who is it not for?

Netatmo offers a basic home security system that’s expandable with additional purchases. Its core is a smart indoor camera featuring 1080p resolution, a 130-degree view, infrared night vision, and facial recognition to minimise unnecessary recording. Users receive alerts for known or unknown individuals and can view footage via the app. The system includes door and window sensors that notify of any movement and can trigger the alarm. The app also checks if doors or windows are left open.

Our researchers feel that, while this is an essentials-style package, there is much to like in terms of performance and ease of use. However, adding a video doorbell and battery backup would significantly enhance security and reliability, especially during power outages.

Pros

User-friendly app

Cons

Limited free features Battery, cellular and solar backup costs extra

Who’s it right for?

  • Best for apartments and flats

Who is it not for?

  • Homeowners with large, expansive properties

Arlo’s catalogue features an extensive suite of outdoor and indoor, doorbell, and floodlight cameras, all of which carry a high-end price tag.

This compact security system is ideal for apartments and other properties with one entrance. The outdoor camera is designed to keep watch over entry points and the approach to the property, while the indoor camera, incorporating a built-in privacy shield, secures the living spaces.

Arlo devices provide strong, smart home integration capabilities, supporting Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. This is a standard feature in the industry, with rivals such as Ring and SimpliSafe providing similar integration.

Arlo’s packages include installation hardware, including screws, wall mounts, USB cables and comprehensive instructions, ideal for the amateur DIYer.

Positioning itself as a security camera supplier, Arlo’s product range primarily consists of visual and audio equipment without the inclusion of any sensors, and this system would, we feel, benefit from the addition of at least one sensor. Professional monitoring services are unavailable, with subscription users responsible for self-monitoring despite the higher cost of the kit.

Arlo’s offerings are high quality, engineered for simple setup, and deliver a comprehensive yet compact home security solution.

Eufy 5-Piece Home Alarm Kit

Pros

Good customer reviews 6-year battery backup

Cons

No cameras

Who’s it right for?

  • Homeowners who want to expand an existing system

Who is it not for?

  • Users who are looking for a complete pre-built package

Eufy is a recent entrant in the home security industry and offers several security packages, with the option to buy more components as needed. Unlike many competitors, Eufy lacks a professional monitoring service. However, customers can oversee their home security system through a dedicated app.

The Eufy 5-Piece Home Alarm Kit is limited in its equipment offerings, which is reflected in its price tag compared to other home security systems. Eufy suggests its package is suitable for small to large homes, but from our research, it’s apparent that larger residences may require additional purchases, such as cameras and video doorbells. However, these can be purchased separately and easily incorporated into the system.

The keypad can last up to six years on a single charge, making it convenient for homeowners who are away for extended periods.

The app features an easy-to-follow interface, allowing remote arming and disarming, optimised security modes, and video viewing capabilities. Instant notifications inform users when sensors and cameras are activated, allowing appropriate actions to be taken.

In summary, the Eufy Home Alarm Kit presents a cost-effective security solution that can be added to an existing camera surveillance system. This adaptability makes Eufy a favourable option for homeowners who want a personalised system covering several entrance points.

How much should you pay for a smart home security system?

The cost of a smart home security system can vary greatly depending on the brand, features, components, and level of professional monitoring you choose. Prices can be anywhere from around £150 for a self-monitored, self-installed system, to several hundred pounds with ongoing monthly costs for a professionally installed and monitored home security system.

icons8-did-you-know-64

275,919 homes in England and Wales were burgled from 2022 to 2023 according to the Office for National Statistics.

What to consider when buying a smart home security system

When buying a smart home security system, you should consider the following factors to find the right solution for your needs.

  • Consider your requirements: Think about your property’s size, entry points and any potential vulnerabilities to help determine the type of system you require and what additional features are necessary, such as motion detectors and smart locks
  • Smart device compatibility: If you already have smart home devices, such as lighting, thermostats and voice assistants, a system that’s compatible with those would help to create an integrated environment
  • Installation requirements: Some systems can be easily installed with basic DIY knowledge, while others may require professional installation. Decide if you’re comfortable fitting the system yourself or would rather pay someone to do it
  • Monitoring type: A self-monitored system requires a mobile app with a user-friendly interface, allowing responsive notifications and alerts and easy system management. Professionally monitored systems typically include a monthly subscription, which can be costly but provides a higher level of protection for your home
  • Budget: Decide on the budget for your system, which should factor in the cost of the devices, installation, and any ongoing subscription fees for monitoring or cloud storage

What do smart home security systems look like?

mart Home Security Graphic
[1] Wall-mounted sensors can detect movement and can even tell the difference between a human and a pet.
[2] Window mounted sensors will trigger if forced open.
[3] Outdoor cameras will detect intruders in a garden or driveway.
[4] Camera doorbells enable you to check a vistitor’s identity before you open the door and will let you keep an eye on packages on your doorstep.
[5] Indoor cameras can be placed near key entry points.
[6] Other sensor types available include smoke and carbon monoxide.
[7] Most systems employ a hub which controls and monitors all connected sensors.

How to install a home security system

Installing smart home security systems can be a straightforward process, especially if you choose a DIY-friendly option. Manufacturers should include instructions and guidelines with their systems as the installation process differs depending on your brand and type, and you should read these first.

Generally, however, if you want to do a DIY smart security set-up, the installation for most systems follows these steps:

Plan your system

plan the security system house
(ADT)

Before installing, carefully plan the placement of each component, including the cameras, motion detectors, sensors and central hub. You should consider which areas of your home you want to monitor most closely and the range of the sensors and cameras you have chosen.

Set up the central hub

The central hub, or base station, is the heart of your system and is designed to connect all of your security devices. If possible, place it in a central location within your home, and the manufacturer should provide instructions to connect it to your wifi network.

Install the cameras

install camera 1
(ADT)

The cameras should be installed in positions that cover entry points and high-traffic areas, yet within wifi range of your central hub. Most cameras can be mounted using adhesive strips or screws and, once fixed in place, should be connected to the central hub according to the instructions.

install camera 2
(ADT)

Install the door and window sensors

install door sensor
(ADT)

Make sure the two parts of a door and window sensor align when closed, and then attach the first part of the sensor to the frame and the second to the opening section of the door or window. That way, the sensor can detect when it is opened and alert the home alarm system

Install the motion detectors

motion detector
(ADT)

The motion detectors should be located in areas in which you want to detect movements, such as large rooms and hallways. The manufacturer’s instructions should include the optimum mounting height and angle and how to connect them to the central hub.

Install the smart locks

If your system includes smart locks, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to replace your existing locks with the smart locks. Ensure that your door is compatible with the smart lock you’ve chosen.

Configure your system

configure the system
(ADT)

Once each component is installed, the accompanying mobile app can be used to configure the settings for your security devices, such as motion sensitivity, camera recording preferences, and alert notifications.

Testing your home security system

test the system

Triggering each sensor, checking camera feeds, and testing any other component, will confirm that your system is connected and communicating correctly with the central hub.

Set up monitoring and automation

(ADT)

If your system includes monitoring services or smart home automation features, these can be managed through your mobile app.

Smart alarm systems vs traditional burglar alarm systems

Can a smart alarm be hacked?

Like any other internet-connected device, smart security systems can be hacked. Their reliance on wifi connectivity for system components, such as motion sensors and cameras, makes their signals vulnerable to interception. Thankfully, even though hacking is possible, it’s not necessarily probable.

In order to breach your particular security system, a hacker must have sufficient knowledge about your technology and its security configurations to select an appropriate method. Additionally, the hacker would require access to your home’s wireless network, necessitating a distinct set of expertise and resources.

However, there are some simple measures you can take to protect your security system from potential hacking attempts. These include:

  • Strong passwords: Use unique, complex passwords for your smart home devices, security system, and wifi network. Regularly update your passwords and avoid using easily guessable information
  • Two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentications for your smart home devices and accounts whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a verification code and your password
  • Robust encryption: When choosing the best security system for homes, selecting one with strong encryption prevents your information falling into the wrong hands. Most systems use end-to-end encryption. This is a method of secure communication that stops third parties accessing your data while it’s transferred from one end system to another, eg from your indoor and outdoor security cameras to the home hub. It scrambles your information, turning it into indecipherable code.
  • Regular updates: Ensure your smart home devices, security systems, and routers are up-to-date with the latest software updates. Updates often include security patches that help protect against known vulnerabilities

Home security systems Q&A

Smart home security systems use wifi and wireless technology to connect and communicate among various components, such as cameras, motion detectors, and alarms. These systems, controllable remotely via mobile devices, protect against intruders, fires, and other hazards. UK home security systems can be programmed to respond to specific events, such as opening doors or detecting motion, and often integrate with other smart home features like lighting and heating for enhanced security and automation.

SimpliSafe’s The Tower is our top recommendation for a home security system; the comprehensive system combines outdoor and indoor security cameras, a motion detector, door and window sensors and an integrated keypad for a high level of protection and privacy.

Most home security systems use a wifi connection, with only a few select brands, such as Reolink, requiring an alternative connection. With that in mind, we found SimpliSafe’s The Tower to be the most effective home security system for those living in an average three-bedroom home.

Arlo Essential Flat and Apartment Security Kit is a great package for renters. It can be DIY installed, is affordable and the equipment included is enough to protect a flat or apartment without the need to purchase add-ons.

Depending on what you need, the best security cameras will boast features such as two-way communication, night vision, motion detection, a wide field of view and high resolution. The Reolink 4K Ultra HD camera (RLC-810A) ticks many of those boxes, offering detailed video capture and impressive night vision, ideal for monitoring the exterior of your home.

CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) and home security cameras both capture and record video footage to enhance the security of a location. The key difference is; CCTV systems transmit video feed to a specific set of monitors via a direct cable connection, whereas modern home security cameras transmit footage over the internet. Access to CCTV video footage is limited to those with physical access – home security cameras footage, live or recorded, can be accessed from anywhere.
