Best Fire Stick VPN for 2024

We’ve tested every major provider to come up with this selection of the best virtual private networks (VPNs) for Fire Stick devices in 2024.

Many of the best VPNs (virtual private networks) offer dedicated apps for the Amazon Fire TV Stick, and these apps are easy to set up and use. The best VPN for Fire Stick owners needs to be a streaming powerhouse, ideally with capable speeds and lots of features to boot. If you don’t have time to read through the entire article, NordVPN is our top recommendation right now thanks to a mix of fast speeds and reliable streaming access.

After hundreds of hours of testing, we’ve picked our top five providers by looking at their prices, performance, security, speeds, streaming capabilities and much more to determine the best VPN for Fire Stick users right now.

Our testing criteria

Our best Fire Stick VPN list uses objective, data-driven tests for scoring and assesses the factors and subfactors that we believe are most important for anyone considering using a VPN on a TV or similar device. This includes 500+ speed tests across multiple desktop and mobile devices along with testing reliability while streaming with Fire Stick VPN apps. In addition, we considered a number of key aspects when comparing VPNs. The breakdown is as follows:

Our VPN tests compared performance across eight critical factors: privacy & security, speed, pricing, content access, usability, features, customer service and the company. Our overall scores were calculated using mathematical formulas and equations derived from our data-driven testing. Each factor has various subfactors. For instance, when looking at privacy and security (25 per cent), we considered whether the service has a kill switch for all devices, ran IP leak tests, tested encryption, looked for any previous security incidents, considered the company’s jurisdiction, examined the company’s data retention practices and much more. We similarly examined each of the other critical factors listed above. Wherever possible, our VPN tests and reviews used objective and quantifiable data to inform scoring. We also used expert subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process. You can see our testing and scoring process here.

Testing factors and evidence

Rather than asking you to take our word for it, we’ve included information detailing the scoring and evidence we collected for each provider during testing.

For example, you’ll find speed test videos for each VPN in the speed section. Selecting privacy & security will bring up a video of our IP leak tests and an average score for this criterion. For content access, we’ve added a screenshot of the VPN while accessing a popular streaming platform such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix. Pricing has screenshots with the latest fees, while customer service contains videos of our interactions with live chat support.

Features include a rundown of what to expect from each VPN, and we used the Flesch score of the VPN’s homepage to check usability. Finally, we included Companies House information for the company section.

When selecting the best Fire Stick VPNs, we looked at their overall scoring as well as specific results relating to performance, streaming, security and more. This data was used, along with our established best VPN framework, to inform the listings.

As always, the best Fire Stick provider should excel in all areas. Factors like server numbers were considered but didn’t contribute to the overall scoring. To determine reliability, we tested each Fire Stick VPN app with a popular streaming service such as Netflix for an hour, noting any issues or dips in performance. Along with content access and reliability, overall scores were used to inform listings.

Recent updates

  • Not much has changed in the recent landscape for Fire Stick VPNs, although I have tested and confirmed that streaming speeds and streaming access are still up-to-date for each provider as of 24 September 2024

The best Fire Stick VPNs for 2024

Highest-scoring VPN overall
Lots of Fire Stick features
Worked with every streaming service tested
Cons
Not the cheapest option
Server countries 111

NordVPN’s best features for fire stick

  • Secure streaming from multiple locations
  • Custom protocol and strong security

Unique features

NordVPN offers some of the most advanced VPN features on the market. One standout is Meshnet, which provides a secure way to send and receive files, route traffic, and access your devices remotely. This feature creates a private network that allows seamless data and file sharing between your devices and even external ones. Meshnet can also act as a VPN server, enabling friends to browse the internet using your IP address.

Another key feature is Double VPN, an advanced security measure where your data is routed through two VPN servers, ensuring it is encrypted twice. This feature not only hides your IP but adds an extra layer of protection, making it even harder for anyone to trace your online activity or final destination.

NordVPN overview

NordVPN has over 6,300 servers located in 111 countries, and it’s particularly effective at bypassing geo-restrictions and unblocking streaming platforms – this makes it a superb choice for the Amazon Fire Stick and many other devices. For example, it worked with every major UK-based streaming service during my tests, and you can expect a similar experience if you’re subscribed to popular platforms in English-speaking regions such as the US and Australia.

The provider takes privacy and security seriously, and it has a strict no-logs policy that has been independently audited. This is definitely something to look for when picking a VPN for your Fire Stick. Rather than taking the provider at its word in terms of any logs collected, an independent audit ensures that your data remains safe at all times, having been verified by third-party experts. In this instance, NordVPN has been audited by Deloitte.

With NordVPN’s app for Fire Stick, there’s a choice of two protocols – OpenVPN and NordLynx – with the latter being Nord’s in-house version of WireGuard. Its servers use AES-256 encryption, and its unique Meshnet feature allows you to link devices with encrypted tunnels to essentially create your own VPN connection. As you’d expect, it also scores well for features and usability).

NordVPN test Fire Stick VPN app

NordVPN is our top recommendation for various reasons. Its speeds via UK servers are impressive, and there was no slowdown or lag during my reliability tests. BBC iPlayer recommends “a little more bandwidth” than 5Mbps for a smooth experience, so you won’t have to worry about slowdown while connected to UK locations.

You’ll be able to get NordVPN for £2.39 per month when looking at longer subscriptions, and it comes with live chat functionality staffed by real humans. You’ll find apps and further support for every device you can think of.

Surfshark’s best VPN features for fire stick

  • Low-cost Fire Stick VPN subscriptions
  • Fastest average speeds across all devices

Unique features

Surfshark Nexus is an advanced VPN standard exclusive to Surfshark. Unlike traditional VPNs, where your traffic is routed through a single chosen server, Nexus creates a network that connects all of Surfshark’s VPN servers. This allows your traffic to be routed through the entire network, rather than a single server, which helps to obscure and hide your data.

Nexus also improves VPN connection speed and stability, offering a more secure browsing experience than conventional VPN setups.

Surfshark VPN overview

There’s a lot to like about Surfshark, and its Fire Stick app delivers a premium service for an affordable price. You’ll find its TV app mirrors those of its VPN for Android and VPN for Mac – which means all of the privacy features are included as standard.

Surfshark offers fast download and upload speeds and a trio of industry-leading VPN protocols – WireGuard, IKEv2 and OpenVPN. Surfshark’s unlimited device connections allow you to install its VPN app on as many Fire TV/streaming devices as you wish, which is always a welcome addition.

Surfshark’s Fire Stick performance is ideal for streaming content, and it works well with various popular platforms that have Fire Stick apps. The provider advertises the ability to access services such as Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Hulu, Hotstar, YLE Areena and AbemaTV, and that’s only a fraction of the selection on offer. During my tests, the only service it couldn’t access was NOW TV.

The provider uses AES-256 encryption while adhering to an independently audited no-logs policy that ensures user data is never stored or shared. With Surfshark’s CleanWeb feature, you can use the Fire Stick app while blocking ads, trackers and malware. The Bypasser feature is Surfshark’s version of split tunnelling, whereby you can choose which apps to route through the encrypted VPN tunnel and select apps to bypass it.

Surfshark test Fire Stick VPN app

Surfshark offers a diverse range of privacy and security features, and it’s one of the fastest VPNs for Fire Stick. The app is easy to use, and connection speeds are comparable to normal browsing speeds, making it an excellent choice for unblocking streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ when travelling abroad. The service also offers a good level of security and privacy. Best of all, Surfshark is available at an affordable price, and you’ll be able to connect to the VPN on every device you own.

Devices supported Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Linux, routers, web browsers, Smart TVs, game consoles and more

What is ExpressVPN best for

  • Seamless streaming access
  • Helpful customer support

ExpressVPN overview

You’ll be glad to hear that ExpressVPN’s dedicated Fire TV app is just as good as the desktop and mobile versions in terms of privacy features. ExpressVPN gives you access to over 3,000 worldwide servers in 105 countries, and the service works especially well with smart TV apps.

The number of servers and the locations on offer are important factors to consider when buying a Fire Stick VPN, especially if you wish to access geo-restricted content and streaming platforms when travelling abroad. For instance, UK VPN servers must be used for local streaming platforms like BBC iPlayer, while a location in the US is ideal for services such as Hulu, HBO Max and ESPN.

In that respect, ExpressVPN is a streaming powerhouse, giving you access to a wide range of geo-restricted platforms without pause. It might lack dedicated streaming servers, but it’s consistently able to come up with the goods during testing.

The provider’s Fire Stick app uses AES-256 encryption, and the company follows a strict no-log policy that has been independently audited by PwC. Your personal data will be safe and secure, as ExpressVPN is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands.

firestick vpn on a tv ExpressVPN

Speeds are relatively nippy, and the proprietary Lightway protocol matched up to the competition when testing UK servers. To give more context, Netflix advises that connections of 15Mbps or higher can be used for UHD content, so there will be no lag as long as your internet speeds are quick enough to begin with.

It’s beginner-friendly, and you’ll have access to a network offering IP addresses in 105 countries. However, it’s worth noting that ExpressVPN’s subscription is expensive, even when compared to the likes of Proton VPN, which is detailed below. As such, ExpressVPN is currently placed in third, even if it’s still a worthwhile option for anyone in need of a dependable and intuitive Fire Stick VPN provider.

4. Proton VPN – best Fire Stick VPN for customer service

Cons

More expensive than average

What is Proton VPN best for

  • Secure content access from anywhere in the world
  • Knowledgeable support staff and quick responses via live chat
  • Audited VPN with strong streaming support

Proton VPN overview

Proton VPN offers both a paid and free subscription for its stellar service. Unfortunately, while Proton’s free VPN server locations can be used to connect to Fire Stick devices without a bandwidth cap, you won’t have access to streaming support unless you opt for the paid version of the software. It has over 6,500 premium servers in 112 countries in an ever-expanding network, and it worked with every popular streaming platform I tested.

Paid Proton VPN plans allow for 10 simultaneous connections, and the provider has open-source apps for every device you can think of. You’ll also benefit from faster server speeds, with UK locations proving to be quick during testing. In other words, it’s another viable solution if you need a VPN to stream 4K content securely with your Fire Stick.

It uses AES-256 encryption and follows a no-logs policy, which has been independently audited. Proton VPN’s dedicated Fire Stick app is easy to use, and the interface clearly displays all of the provider’s server locations. However, beyond selecting a server, there wasn’t much else to do. For example, there were no options to customise protocols or access to extras such as split tunnelling. It’s a shame, given the VPN is known for the many advanced features found in its desktop and mobile apps.

Proton VPN for Firestick main screen

Proton VPN is a secure and reliable service with excellent speeds and a good reputation within the industry. It comes with lots of available servers worldwide. However, when we tested its Amazon Fire Stick app, there were no options to customise privacy, which was disappointing compared to the alternatives listed above, particularly as some of them offer cheaper subscriptions.

5. CyberGhost – best Fire Stick VPN for beginners

What is CyberGhost best for

  • Simple Fire Stick VPN apps
  • 45-day money-back guarantee

CyberGhost VPN overview

Next on my list of the best Fire Stick VPNs on the market right now, CyberGhost is a suitable solution for anyone aiming to access streaming services securely with the least amount of hassle. As with ExpressVPN, CyberGhost is especially easy to use, and speeds are impressive from a range of locations worldwide.

Dedicated streaming servers work with a range of popular platforms worldwide, and you’ll also find options that are optimised for devices like Fire TV Stick and Android TV. However, I couldn’t access Amazon Prime Video, Sky Go, or Channel 4 during my tests, so you’ll need to look elsewhere for access to some UK services.

If you’re planning to sign up for a while, its two-year deal works out to only £1.92 per month, so it’s one of the cheapest VPNs overall. In addition, CyberGhost comes with a simple 45-day refund policy (for its six month and annual subscription) if you’re hoping to test whether it works with a specific site or service. The lack of a 12-month deal is disappointing, and it’s one of the only providers listed that doesn’t offer yearly coverage.

CyberGhost test Fire Stick VPN app

CyberGhost is great for accessing geo-restricted content. It has excellent speeds, and works out to be highly affordable. It’s a great combination for many would-be users, while almost 12,000 servers worldwide is an undeniably massive network.

It doesn’t offer as many advanced privacy features as some alternatives, but it’s still an excellent choice for gaming, streaming, and anyone wishing to stay protected at a low price. If you’re in need of an affordable streaming solution, CyberGhost is easily one of the best VPNs available for Fire Stick devices.

How to pick the best Fire Stick VPN

To find out which VPN is best for Fire Stick, consider a few important factors before rushing to make a purchase.

  1. Internet speeds are important when streaming, so choosing a VPN that doesn’t affect your connection too much is crucial.
  2. Privacy features such as split tunnelling and the use of AES-256 encryption are important.
  3. A VPN shouldn’t break the bank, so it’s worth checking to see if another provider offers similar features for a lower price. If you only plan to use a VPN for secure streaming, various cheap VPN providers are likely to fit the bill. Of course, you’ll find free VPNs listed on the Amazon Appstore, but we would highly recommend avoiding those – more on that later.
  4. While many VPNs have a lots of features to pick from, the same can’t be said for most Fire Stick VPN apps. Given the majority of users are focused on streaming support, they offer a pared-down experience that ensures access to the fastest speeds.

What to watch out for when purchasing a Fire Stick VPN

When purchasing a VPN for your Fire Stick, paying close attention to the small print and understanding exactly what you’re signing up for is essential.

  • Price transparency: while many VPNs advertise low monthly rates, these are often based on long-term contracts, which require full upfront payment. Make sure you understand the full cost of the contract duration before you commit and look out for any potential hidden fees
  • Contract length: VPNs often offer significant discounts for longer-term subscriptions, but ensure you’re comfortable with the commitment
  • Free trials: VPN free trials can be a great way to try out a service without committing fully. However, be sure to read the fine print – some services may require you to cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged
  • Automatic renewals: some VPN services automatically renew your contract at the end of the term, and that renewal price may be higher than you were paying for the first term
  • Cancellation policy: understand the provider’s cancellation policy. Some services might not offer a prorated refund if you cancel your service before the contract ends. A good provider will offer a money-back guarantee so you can cancel for a refund if you’re not happy with the service – the time period is usually 30 days but can be as high as 45 days, as is the case with CyberGhost’s longer subscriptions
  • Additional services: VPN providers may try to bundle additional services or features for an extra cost so be clear on what’s included in your package and whether you actually need the extras

Overall, NordVPN scores the highest and is my recommendation as the best provider for Fire Stick users. It worked with every streaming service I could think of during testing, and speeds were consistently some of the fastest overall. It has lots of interesting features such as Threat Protection, and it doesn’t break the bank if you’re looking at longer subscriptions. Having extensively tested each of the Fire Stick apps for the VPNs detailed above, it’s worth noting that there was no lag to speak of while checking overall reliability.

Fire Stick VPNs we wouldn’t recommend

A Fire Stick VPN has two functions – privacy and unblocking streaming content. With that being said, while testing out various providers, we found ourselves creating a list of VPNs we wouldn’t recommend for Fire Stick.

Windscribe is the first on that list. The service is not great at unblocking geo-restricted content, and some servers that were situated far away from the UK were virtually unusable when streaming. We also wouldn’t recommend HMA, TunnelBear or VPNSecure, all of which are fairly basic, have a limited choice of servers and did not cope well with streaming during our testing. Mullvad is a capable VPN in terms of speed and privacy, but it lacks streaming support, which is likely to be important for the majority of users.

Why do you need a VPN for Fire Stick?

Reasons to use a VPN with your Fire Stick will vary, but the main objectives tend to be privacy, ISP throttling and streaming.

  • Fire Stick devices only come with standard privacy and security features, which means third parties, such as your internet service provider (ISP), can still track your online activity. With a VPN, you can protect your IP address as well as make use of other security features such as ad trackers and malware blockers.
  • ISP throttling happens when your ISP is aware that you’re using streaming platforms such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer or Hulu and attempts to slow down your internet speed as a consequence. A VPN for Fire Stick encrypts your online activities and therefore keeps your ISP in the dark, as it can only see that you’re connected to the VPN server.
  • Fire Stick VPNs can also help you securely access content so you can enjoy all your favourite shows when you’re travelling abroad.
  • Our top three recommended best Fire Stick VPN apps also include enhanced features such as split tunnelling, which allows you to route your streaming services through the secure VPN tunnel while sending other traffic through your regular internet connection, speeding up your VPN while you’re watching live content.

Each of the providers mentioned above allows for multiple simultaneous connections. As such, you’ll be able to protect all of your devices using a single account.

Features to look for when choosing a Fire Stick VPN

Consider the following features when purchasing a VPN to use on your Fire Stick:

  • Compatibility: make sure the provider has a Fire Stick app – preferably with at least a few features found in mobile and desktop versions. Fire Stick VPN apps tend to be less feature-filled than desktop or mobile options
  • Security: make sure your VPN service has a good level of encryption – ideally AES-256 – and a variety of protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2. Some VPNs come with additional security features, such as the custom protocols found with ExpressVPN and NordVPN
  • Privacy: choose a VPN with a no-logs policy that has been independently audited. This means a third-party company has verified the VPN’s logging policy
  • Speed: select a VPN with lots of speedy servers available worldwide. Some even offer streaming servers that are perfect for Fire Stick devices
  • Money-back guarantee: ensure the VPN has a simple money-back guarantee so you can test it out for yourself at no risk

How to set up a VPN on your Fire Stick

To set up a VPN on your Fire Stick, follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose a VPN provider: pick a VPN that has the features/streaming support you need. NordVPN is our top pick for Fire Stick users. Sign up for the service using any compatible device
  2. Download the VPN from the Fire Stick Apps menu: go to the Apps menu, search for the VPN provider you’ve chosen and click download
  3. Install and launch the app: sign in to your VPN account, and follow the configuration process
  4. Connect to the VPN: choose a server location, and turn on any other privacy and security features

Why you shouldn’t get a free VPN for Fire Stick from the Amazon Appstore

While there are plenty of free VPNs available on the Amazon Appstore, they usually come with limitations, such as restricted data use, and don’t support streaming, which renders them practically useless for a Fire Stick. It’ll be tough to download files given most free VPN servers are overloaded with too many users, so I’d advise sticking with a paid solution for entertainment purposes.

  • Streaming services tend to make a point of blocking VPN servers, and free locations often aren’t changed regularly enough to evade any bans
  • Performance is also an issue with many free Fire Stick VPNs, which is all the more noticeable given that typical speeds are slower to begin with
  • Free VPNs most likely won’t be as secure, and some have been found to harvest user data themselves
  • Many free VPNs also don’t tend to have as many privacy features as paid versions and are less likely to be encrypted with AES-256. Whether your data is unintentionally leaked or sold to third parties, using a random free provider is a bad idea in terms of online security

With the Fire Stick VPNs listed above, you’ll be able to take advantage of a money-back guarantee that doubles as a trial of sorts. This is arguably a better solution if you only need a VPN for your Fire Stick in the short term.

Best VPN for Fire Stick FAQs

A Fire Stick VPN will route all your app traffic through a secure and encrypted tunnel via a server location you’ve chosen. VPN servers are usually rented or owned by the provider. Some VPNs can also access streaming services and work to mask your IP address and keep all your sensitive data safe and secure.

Yes. It’s legal to use a VPN with a Fire Stick. VPN apps are available via the Fire Stick store, and using a VPN is a great way to securely access various streaming platforms. However, you might be in breach of the terms and conditions laid out by the streaming service, especially if you attempt to stream content from a different region.

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll see faster speeds, even when using the best Fire Stick VPNs. Due to the nature of the encryption process, some slowdown is to be expected. Speedier servers remedy this to an extent, but they’re unlikely to improve performance unless you were already being throttled by your ISP.

No. First-generation Fire Stick devices aren’t compatible with VPNs. Later Fire Stick TV models work with no issues, and the same goes for the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max. If you run into any issues, our recommendations all come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
